Treatment & Procedures

Rheumatology has its roots in Immunology, which deals with the study of the processes which leadto diseases related to joints and pains. Today with tremendous progress in the field of Immunology, diagnosis and treatments of pain disorders requires specific training in the field and such specialistsare called as 'Clinical Immunologists and Rheumatologists';.

At the Department of Rheumatology at KMC Manipal, we have highly experienced clinicalimmunologists and rheumatologists to treat Spondyloarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis, systemicautoimmune disorders and other pain disorders.

Arthritis in itself is not a disease. It is merely a manifestation of an underlying wider disease whichmay affect multiple other organs of the body. In any patient with arthritis, it is the primary job of theimmunologist and rheumatologist to establish a diagnosis and then treat it. When this is doneaccurately, the arthritis is likely to respond very well to treatment. Our department provides thecutting edge diagnostics and therapeutic options to make this happen so that no patient witharthritis is left behind without a diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Rheumatoid arthritis (joint pains involving the hands and feet), spondyloarthritis (predominantlyback pain with restriction of movements), arthritis associated with psoriasis and bowel diseasesalong with degenerative disorders like osteoarthritis (predominant knee pain) are treated in therheumatology department.

Autoimmune conditions such as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), Vasculitis and Myositis whichcan affect multiple organ systems such as skin rash, muscle aches and pains with weakness, jointpains, kidney involvement and nerve involvement are also treated in the department.

Thickening of the skin (systemic sclerosis), localized (tennis elbow) and diffuse pain (fibromyalgia) arealso dealt in the department by the rheumatologist. Weakening of the bone (osteoporosis) alsorequires careful evaluation and hence treated by the rheumatologist in the department.
